• Wongras wins in Wagga Wagga

After some near-misses, Thailand teenager Cholcheva Wongras is a champion on the WPGA Tour of Australasia thanks to a brilliant round of 10-under-par 63 to close out the Navigate Wagga Wagga Country Club Pro-Am today.

With eight birdies and an eagle, the 17-year-old cleared out to a five-stroke win in the 36-hole event, totalling 14-under-par to head Sydneysider Claire Shin (67-70) and Malaysia’s Liyana Azizan Durisic (68-69).

It caps off an outstanding Australian campaign for Wongras, who last week was second at the World Sand Greens Championship at Binalong after earlier in the season taking third at both the Australian Women’s Classic at Coffs Harbour and Webex Players Series Murray River at Cobram-Barooga.

She heads the WPGA Tour of Australasia Order of Merit from Australia’s Kirsten Rudgeley after the first half of the season.

Without her regular caddie and coach this week, Wongras had Wagga captain Dennis Schultz on the bag across the two days and he played a key role in the runaway success.

“His green reading was great this week. It helped me a lot,” Wongras said.

“I really putted well today.

“Getting to work with Dennis was really good.”

Headed to LPGA Tour Qualifying School at the end of the year, Wongras started Friday in fourth place, two shots behind overnight leaders Shin and Soo Jin Lee.

Her bogey-free 63 included a back nine of 30 with a run of 5-under-par from the 14th to 17th holes.

“Next year it would be fun to come back to Australia,” the Tour’s latest champion said.
