• Kobori hoping to keep it in the family

As is the case with a large number of women in the field at the Webex Players Series Sydney this week, Momoka Kobori is using the mixed event at Castle Hill Country Club as part of her preparations for a three-tournament run of co-sanctioned events on Australian shores.

Starting at the first ever standalone Australian WPGA Championship on the Gold Coast, the WPGA Tour of Australasia will combine with the Ladies European Tour (LET) for three consecutive weeks, with Kobori taking a chance to stay in Australia after jetting in from Saudi Arabia on Tuesday morning.

Finishing tied for 27th at the PIF Saudi Ladies International last week, Kobori’s form on the LET was only part of her unique preparation for this week at Castle Hill that she hopes will hold her in good stead. The Kiwi’s brother, and winner of last year’s Webex Players Series Sydney, Kazuma filling in as caddie.

“He was like ‘yeah, you'll be fine’,” Momoka said of asking Kazuma about this week’s host venue.

“Just keep it in play. I mean, it wasn't the most helpful, but I was like ‘yeah, no, I appreciate the thoughts’. He just said just hit fairways and agrees and hole putts.”

Adding of the now DP World Tour player’s role as caddie: “I probably didn't get him to do much in terms of giving advice and things because I've just kind of had my own game plan and don't always have the same game.

“It was basically a matter of can you please carry the bag and come with and have a bit of a yarn and that was what he did.”

The younger Kobori’s nonchalant attitude to the course and winning the Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia Order of Merit aside, Momoka has plenty of her own experience on Australian shores, including a play-off loss in a Webex Players Series event and victory at the 2023 Ford Women’s NSW Open.

The benefit of another event to play this week rather than two straight weeks off should be a huge positive to Kobori ahead of the trio of co-sanctioned events that could set her year on a tremendous course as she continues to try to claim family bragging rights.

“It's great for me, honestly, like you said, it's as close as it gets to home for me and to have another extra event. Three in a row makes it a lot more worth it for the European girls to come over,” Kobori said.

“I think we're going to see a lot more of them come over than we did last couple of years. So that's going to be really exciting. And for me, it's always nice to be able to compete at home. That's really exciting.”

Webex Players Series Sydney is live on Fox Sports, available on Foxtel and Kayo.
