Karrie Webb secured win number 39 on the LPGA at the ShopRite LPGA Classic presented by Acer in Galloway, New Jersey this morning.

It was an emotional week for Webb as her grandma has been in hospital. The family weren’t sure if she was going to make it and Karrie’s Grandma told her to win this week for her and of course, Webb didn’t want to let her grandma down. In what is further great news, her Grandma is on the mend.

Asked after her round if winning gets “old”, the seven time major champion responded “It never gets old and it never gets any easier either.”

“Today was extremely tough. I’m just glad that I pulled it out. I knew I need to make one birdie coming in because I didn’t think I could par in and feel comfortable, so it was a great birdie on the last”.

Webb then explained the situation with her grandma and said the win was for her.

Webb was happy when she woke up and the wind was blowing as hard as it was. Webb, who started five shots behind China’s Shanshan Feng, got off to a flying start with a birdie on the second followed by an eagle on the very next hole on the par-5 fourth.

Her only blemish came on the sixth when she took a bogey, apart from that Webb’s ball striking ability and sinking critical par putts were the keys to her win today.

Mid-way through the final round three players were tied for the lead but it became a two way dual between Webb and Feng at the end.

Webb had a superb up and down from 40 yards on the par-5 18th to birdie the last and move to four-under-par. That meant Feng had to birdie two out of the last three holes when Webb holed out.

However, the overnight leader made a bogey on the par-3 17th when she found the sand off the tee and didn’t get up and down. Feng now had to eagle the last to force a play-off. It wasn’t to be and Webb was in the winner’s circle for the second time in 2014 after winning the Volvik RACV Ladies Masters on the Gold Coast earlier this year on the ALPG tour.

Webb finished atop of the leaderboard at four-under-par after posting rounds of 72, 69 and 68, two clear of Feng, with South Korean Hee Young Park a further shot back and outright third.

Webb is projected to move to 9th on the Rolex Women’s World rankings after her win.

Lindsey Wright was the only other Australian to make the week-end, she finished tied for 37th position at five-over-par.

The tour now heads to Pittsford New York for the second major of the LPGA season, the Wegmans LPGA Championship.
